However, I spent some time with it and now it works great for me. I am an old lady and complicated electronic stuff tends to throw me. It does things that don't interest me but as a phone it is fine. I was surprised at how quickly this phone arrived. It is more complex than I had expected.
The ergonomics are awkward from the slippery buttons to the uncomfortable sharp edge that contacts your ear when you use the phone. If I had to use this phone more than very occasionally I would probably toss it. Others have made mention of many of the features so I won't repeat the list. The MUTE button is directly below the OFF button and since and both are small and slippery it seems inevitable that one will end a call when the intention is to mute. Three stars for clarity and range, zero for ergonomics. I have not used the answering function so I won't comment on that.Pros: Clarity and range are good and the base station is a small footprint. Cons: This is one of the least elegant examples of industrial design I've seen in some long time.
I had already done this and it would work for a short time and than it would go back to the two rings and than disconnecting. It would work and than not work until it was reset again. My answering machine would only periodically pick up calls. In all it was reset 4 times and each time the result was the same. I'm returning the phone and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I had machine on and rings set to 4 but phone would only ring twice and than it would disconnect the call without answering machine picking it up. I called tech support and they had me reset the rings and the answering machine.
I hear well on my end and others don't hear an echo. Excellent sound quality. This is the best phone I ever had and the price was very reasonable. I use a head set with this phone and clip it to my belt. I've also called the Panasonic from another State to check my messages which offer several options with crisp clear sound. It is easy to set up and offers a choice of rings, tones, messages etc. The speaker phone works better than any I have used.
They told me that the "phone is designed that way." They further advised to use the phone as much as possible for two weeks and that it would self correct (to some extent). So, it becomes a very bright night light. You hear yourself when you're speaking into the handset. I ended up taking the handset off the base every night so it the phone would not light up the bedroom.
This was a terrible phone. The representative refused to explain either why the phone would be designed with an echo or how it would "self correct." That was enough to convince me to return it. This was so distracting that I called Panasonic Customer Support. From my limited usage, I found two major problems.
Second, and more seriously, there is a terrible echo with this phone. I recommend avoiding Panasonic phones. First, it is impossible to turn off the screen when the phone is in the base unit. regardless of whether or not you want it.
